Important Factors Affecting NIT Cutoff 2025

Several factors determine the cutoffs for NITs in BTech programs,

  • The total number of candidates appearing in the JEE Main exam .
  • The total number of BTech seats available in NITs.
  • The difficulty level of the entrance exam.
  • Previous year’s trends in JEE Main cutoff
  • Performance in the JEE Main Exam
  • Cutoff patterns from the previous year’s exam

These factors collectively influence the cutoff marks required for admission to BTech programs in NITs. The number of applicants and the total available seats helps determine the competition of the admissions processes. The difficulty level of the entrance exam is considered to ensure that the cutoff scores accurately reflect the candidates’ performance. Additionally, the cutoff trends

from previous years’ JEE Main exams are considered to maintain consistency and provide a fair evaluation of the candidates.

NIT Cutoff 2025 FAQs

What is the JEE Main qualifying cutoff for 2025?

The qualifying cutoff (minimum percentile to appear for JEE Advanced) in JEE Main 2025 is:

  • General: ~93.10
  • OBC-NCL: ~79.43
  • EWS: ~80.38
  • SC: ~61.15
  • ST: ~47.90

However, this is just to be eligible for JEE Advanced—not the cutoff for admission into NITs.

What do the JoSAA NIT opening and closing ranks mean?
  • Opening rank is the highest rank at which the first seat in a particular branch/category is allotted.
  • Closing rank is the lowest rank at which that branch/category still got a seat.

These ranks vary each round, and the final (Round 6) results have been released

Where can I find category-wise opening and closing ranks for NITs in 2025?

The JoSAA portal provides the official opening and closing ranks for all NITs, branches, and categories across all rounds. Round 6 (final round) data is already available.

What percentile corresponds to a JEE Main score of, say, 150 marks?

Though specific marks-percentile mapping isn’t provided for 2025, a rule of thumb:

  • 150 marks in JEE Main typically indicates a percentile in the 90–95 range—sufficient for entry into less competitive or non-CSE branches of NITs.

For more competitive branches like CSE, top NITs such as Trichy or Warangal usually require:

Rank under 5,000, implying a 95+ percentile.

How should I interpret these figures—percentiles vs ranks vs marks?
  • Percentile: Your relative performance among all exam takers.
  • Marks: Score obtained in JEE Main.
  • Rank: Your All-India Rank (AIR), derived from percentile.

Admission depends largely on rank, not just percentile or marks. Use JoSAA’s rank-based cutoffs to compare accurately.
