The exam is conducted once every year by one of the IITs under the supervision of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). However, there are specific eligibility rules that not only define who can appear for the exam after Class 12 but also restrict the number of attempts permitted. In this guide, we provide a clear overview of the JEE Advanced attempt limits, including the maximum number of attempts, eligibility after Class 12, and category-wise relaxations. This will help students plan their preparation effectively while staying within the official attempt guidelines. How Many Attempts for JEE Advanced After Class 12? A common question among aspirants is: How many attempts for JEE Advanced after 12th? The answer is straightforward a student can attempt JEE Advanced only twice in two consecutive years, starting from the year of passing Class 12. For example: If you passed Class 12 in 2024, you are eligible to attempt: JEE Advanced 2024 JEE Advanced 2025 You cannot appear for JEE Advanced 2026 unless you repeat your Class 12 in 2025. JEE Advanced Attempt Limit Understanding JEE Advanced Attempt Rules It is essential for aspirants to know the attempt rules of JEE Advanced to avoid disqualification: Qualification through JEE Main: To become eligible for JEE Advanced, students must secure a rank within the top 2.5 lakh candidates across all categories in the JEE Main examination. Number of Attempts: A candidate can appear for JEE Advanced only twice—once in the year they complete Class 12 and once in the following year. No further attempts are allowed beyond these two consecutive years. JEE Main Attempts vs. JEE Advanced Attempts: Students may attempt JEE Main up to three times in consecutive years, but these attempts do not impact the limit for JEE Advanced. Admit Card Download Not Considered an Attempt: Simply downloading the JEE Advanced admit card is not counted as an attempt if the candidate does not appear for the exam. Can I Appear in JEE Advanced After Taking Drop? Yes, students who take a drop year after completing Class 12 are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, but only once in the following year—provided they did not appear in the same year they passed Class 12. For Instance: If you pass Class 12 in 2024 and choose not to attempt JEE Advanced 2024, you will still be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2025.
