The IIT Council meets once every year to look upon the functional and administrative outlooks of the IITs. And during the IIT Council meeting held on the 27th of September, the council has decided to exempt the foreign students from taking the JEE main exam.

Although it is the screening exam for selection to IIT entrance JEE Advanced, this exemption will allow the foreign students to appear directly for the JEE Advanced.

Moreover to it, this new rule will also benefit Overseas Citizens of India (OCI Cardholders).

This year the IIT Council chaired by HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ took up various decisions, approvals, and reforms which includes:-

  • Early exit option for B.Tech students, and
  • A mandate to increase the fees for MTech courses.

One of the major agenda of the Council was to promote IITs as global education destinations and to encourage foreign students to study in IITs.

Besides exempting foreign students from taking JEE Main, the Council has agreed to grant scholarships to such foreign students.

Apart from the goodies for students, the Council also concluded to ease up the rules of recruitment for foreign faculty. Where the recruitment of the foreign faculty would be liberalized and continued further.
