Managing bodies for IIT Kharagpur MBBS program and the hospital management

  • IIT Kharagpur will award the MBBS as-well-as postgraduate degrees and will manage the academic affairs.
  • Whereas, the day-to-day hospital management will be run by the special purpose vehicle floated under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
  • The IIT Kharagpur directors will head the hospital’s board of directors and will include senior IIT faculty.
  • The hospital will run on a cross-subsidy model in a not-for-profit model. The officiating Director Professor Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya further adds that 10% of the total beds would be free of charge. Whereas, 65% of the beds would be charged according to the rates as provisioned in the central and the state health insurance schemes.
  • Project director of Dr B C Roy Super Specialty Hospital (Satadal Saha) mentions that they intend to generate a whole ecosystem with a nursing college and a school for paramedical and technical experts.
  • The IIT Kharagpur will also set up mobile hospital units, to respond to the healthcare needs in the immediate neighborhood. Since the authorities anticipate that there would be a heavy rush of people to this new hospital.
  • Thus, the basic diagnostics and treatment of the patients done by these mobile units will reduce the patient rush in the main hospital. According to the media sources, IIT Kanpur is also aiming to create this hospital model with a capacity of 500-bed of its own.
