The National Medical Commission Act 2019 makes NEET the only Pre-Medical Exam from 2020 onwards. The Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced on 4th of October 2019 that the admission to MBBS courses in AIIMS, JIPMER will be drawn through NEET from the upcoming year 2020.

In addition to the merging of various pre-medical examinations into NEET. The inclusion of JIPMER and AIIMS (MBBS) into the common national entrance test will ease up the whole scenario more. As the students aspiring to become a doctor will need to prepare only for a single exam. Rather than three separate exams viz. NEET, AIIMS, and JIPMER.

Earlier, the students had to prepare for Reasoning, General Awareness, Logical Reasoning and General English apart from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. As, apart from PCB, the objective type questions in AIIMS (M.B.B.S) included Reasoning, General Awareness, and Logical Reasoning

Likewise in JIPMER, the objective type questions included logical reasoning and general English, apart from the questions from PCB.

According to the words of honorable Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan

“This will help set common standards in the medical education sector in the country.”

Till 2019, the State Medical Colleges, Medical Colleges falling under Central Government as well as other Private Medical Colleges used to derive their admissions through NEET. Although, AIIMS and JIPMER organized their independent entrance exams till 2019.

As these two institutes of national importance were enacted by the separate acts of parliament and came directly under the MOHFW (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare)

Single Counseling Process of NEET for All Medical and Dental Colleges

Following the new guidelines of the National Medical Commission Act 2019, a single counseling process will take place for admission in AIIMS, JIPMER, the State Medical Colleges, and Medical Colleges falling under Central Government, other Private Medical Colleges as well as all dental colleges across India.

Along with the provision of common counseling for AIIMS, JIPMER, and Other Medical and Dental Colleges, the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 will put forward a common final year MBBS exam.

It will apply to all Medical and Dental Institutes including Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS and JIPMER.
